General & booking

Do you offer same-day service?

Same-day service is available Monday through Saturday when the schedule allows. Call 832-379-0202 early in the day for the best chance at a same-day visit, especially during summer heat waves.

What areas do you serve?

We're based in Houston (77080) and work across the greater Houston area, including Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress and Pearland. If you're not sure you're in range, call and ask. See the service area page for more.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. TEX Heating & AC is a licensed Texas HVAC contractor, license TACLA146405E, regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. We're also a BBB Accredited Business with an A rating.

What are your hours?

Mon to Sat, 8 AM to 6 PM. You can send a service request through the website any time and we'll get back to you during business hours.

Do you work on any brand of equipment?

Yes. We service and repair most major brands of air conditioners, furnaces, heat pumps and air handlers. For new installs we mostly use Ruud equipment. See products.

Air conditioning

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

The most common causes are a dirty filter, a clogged or frozen evaporator coil, a failed capacitor that stops the outdoor fan or compressor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and thermostat first. If the outdoor unit is humming but the fan isn't spinning, turn the system off and call us so the compressor isn't damaged.

How long does a central AC system last in Houston?

Most last roughly 10 to 15 years here. Our long cooling season and humidity work systems harder than in milder climates. Regular maintenance helps a system reach the high end of that range.

Why is there water around my indoor unit?

Your AC pulls a lot of water out of Houston air, and it drains through a condensate line. If that line clogs with algae or debris, water backs up into the pan and can overflow or trip a safety switch that shuts the system off. Clearing and treating the drain line is part of every tune-up.

What temperature should I set my thermostat to in summer?

The U.S. Department of Energy suggests 78°F when you're home and higher when you're away. Every degree warmer saves energy. If 78°F feels sticky, the problem may be humidity rather than temperature, which a properly sized system or a dehumidifier can fix.

Can you work on ductless mini-splits?

Yes. We clean, service and repair ductless mini-split systems, and can help you decide whether one makes sense for a garage, addition or room that never gets comfortable.

My system uses R-22. What should I do?

R-22 production ended in 2020, so the refrigerant that remains is scarce and expensive. A small repair can still make sense, but if an R-22 system needs a major repair or has a leak, replacing it is usually the better long-term spend.

Heating

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes are a thermostat set to fan "on" instead of "auto", a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter that trips the high-limit switch, or an ignition problem. Check the thermostat and filter first. If it keeps happening, call us.

How long does a furnace last?

A gas furnace typically lasts 15 to 20 years. Houston furnaces run fewer hours than northern ones, but many sit in hot attics, so age, rust and safety checks matter more than hours of use.

Do I need a heating tune-up if winters are mild here?

Yes. A fall tune-up checks the burners, ignition, flame sensor, heat exchanger and gas connections, and it confirms the system is safe before the first cold front. A cracked heat exchanger or a loose gas fitting is just as dangerous in a warm winter.

What's the difference between a furnace and a heat pump?

A furnace makes heat by burning natural gas (or with electric heat strips). A heat pump moves heat from outdoor air into your home using electricity, and works as your air conditioner in summer. Heat pumps are very efficient at the temperatures a typical Houston winter brings. Many homes pair a heat pump with backup heat for hard freezes.

Why does my heat pump look frozen?

A light frost in winter is normal, and the unit runs a defrost cycle to clear it. A thick block of ice, or ice that stays for hours, points to low refrigerant, a failed defrost control, or poor airflow. Turn it to emergency heat if you have it and call us.

Indoor air quality

What humidity should my house be?

Roughly 40 to 50 percent is comfortable for most Houston homes. Above 60 percent, mold and dust mites thrive and rooms feel clammy even when the thermostat says 74°F.

Will a whole-home dehumidifier help if my AC already removes moisture?

Often, yes. An AC only dries the air while it's running. On mild, muggy days it may run so little that humidity climbs. A whole-home dehumidifier works independently and keeps humidity in range all year.

Do air purifiers like REME HALO or Air Scrubber really work?

They install in your ductwork and treat air every time the fan runs, which helps with odors, airborne particles and some germs. They work best alongside good filtration and humidity control, not instead of it. We'll tell you whether one makes sense for your home.

What's a MERV rating?

MERV measures how well a filter catches particles, on a scale of 1 to 16 for home filters. MERV 8 to 11 is a good range for most systems. Higher-MERV filters in a thin 1-inch frame can choke airflow, which is why we often recommend a 4-inch media cabinet.

Maintenance & filters

How often should I get my system serviced?

Twice a year is ideal in Houston: the AC in spring before the heat hits, and the heating side in fall before the first cold front.

How often should I change my air filter?

Standard 1-inch filters every 1 to 3 months. Four-inch media filters every 6 to 12 months. Change them more often if you have pets, allergies or ongoing construction.

What happens during a tune-up?

We clean and inspect the system, test electrical parts and safety controls, check refrigerant and airflow, clear the drain line, and give you a written rundown of anything that needs attention. See the full checklist on the maintenance page.

Pricing & payment

Do you give upfront pricing?

Yes. We explain what we found and give you the price before any work starts, so you can decide what makes sense for your home.

Do you offer financing?

Financing may be available on new system installs. Ask when we quote your project and we'll walk you through current options. See financing & specials.

Do you have any current specials?

When we run a seasonal offer, it's posted on the financing & specials page and on our Instagram.
